ABSTRACT

Abstract Calophyllum brasiliense is a species native to Brazil and has potential for use in the timber industry, in the reforestation of degraded areas, besides having medicinal properties. Its propagation is mainly by seeds which, depending on their recalcitrant characteristics, leads to difficulty in conservation, due to changes in its physiological potential during storage. Aiming to contribute to the expansion of its cultivation, rational use and conservation, the objective of this study was to investigate the behavior of C. brasiliense seeds during storage. Different packings (paper, aluminum and polyethylene) and environmental conditions (room temperature and cold chamber) were quarterly tested over 12 months, by evaluating germination viability and vigor. Based on the results, it was concluded that packaging in polyethylene and freezer storage provided the best conditions for the conservation of seeds, keeping them viable for a period of nine months.

ABSTRACT

Ayapanatriplinervis (Asteraceae), also known as "Japana branca" and "Japana roxa" in Brazil, is a medicinal herb from the Amazon used as tonic, digestive, antidiarrheal, among others. This study aimed to characterize the morphoanatomy of the aerial vegetative axis of A. triplinervis to corroborate that this species has morphotypes, in order to provide data for their identification. Samples were collected in the Garden of Medicinal Plants of the Federal Rural University of Amazônia and Embrapa Amazônia Oriental, and they were analyzed morphologically and by the standardtechniques of plant anatomy. The stem is cylindrical, white or purple, with uniseriate epidermis, trichomes and endoderm with starch sheath and Casparian strips. The leaves are simple, opposite, with attenuate or arising basis; they have anomocytic stomata, epicuticular wax plates or granules, pearl glands, dorsiventral mesophyll with collateral vascular bundles and secretory ducts. Ayapana triplinervis showed different morphoanatomical features betweenthe white and purple types, which enablesthe distinction between the two morphotypes.

ABSTRACT

The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence of celiac disease in children of short stature and to assess whether some of the routine laboratory examinations performed to determine the cause of short stature could suggest the presence of celiac disease. A total of 106 children of short stature and no gastrointestinal symptoms were studied. An extensive endocrine work-up had been negative for all of them and an additional investigation was performed by measuring the concentration of antiendomysial antibody. Patients who were positive for antiendomysial antibody ( > or = 1:10) or who exhibited IgA deficiency (less than 5 mg/dl) were referred for an endoscopic intestinal biopsy. We detected a pathological titer of antiendomysial IgA in six of these patients. Five of them showed histological abnormalities compatible with celiac disease and one had normal histology and was considered to have potential celiac disease. The prevalence of celiac disease in the population studied was 4.7 percent (with another 0.9 percent of the subjects being considered to have potential celiac disease). The children with celiac disease did not differ in any of the parameters tested when compared to those without celiac disease, though they showed an improvement in growth velocity after treatment with a gluten-free diet. We conclude that it is important to test all children with short stature for celiac disease by measuring antiendomysial IgA.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

1. The role of testosterone (T) in growth was evaluated in 11 prepubertal hypopituitary males during two 15-day periods separated by a 4-week interval, i.e., before (PRE-T period) and during T ester treatment (50 mg every 5 days, 3 im doses-T period). 2. T increased growth hormone (GH) secretion, assessed by 4-h rhythm (mean +/- SEM = 1.90 +/- 0.27 vs 1.77 +/- 0.21 ng/ml; P < 0.05) and after a GHRH stimulus (3.42 +/- 0.54 vs 3.08 +/- 0.43 ng/ml; P < 0.05) as compared to the PRE-T period. 3. T also increased basal somatomedin-C (SM-C) levels (0.20 +/- 0.03 vs 0.15 +/- 0.02 U/ml; P < 0.001) and SM-C generation. After GH was administered in 4 im doses (0.01, 0.02, 0.05 and 0.1 U/kg), SM-C levels were 0.31 +/- 0.08 vs 0.24 +/- 0.07 U/ml, P < 0.001. T did not change incremental (absolute minus basal) SM-C levels (0.15 +/- 0.08 vs 0.12 +/- 0.07 U/ml; P > 0.05). 4. The results suggest that T increased plasma SM-C levels by stimulating residual GH secretion in hypopituitary males
